070 Shake’s PETRICHOR finds grace in the gloom of existence and her raw, poetic take on life’s darker corners continue to captivate and challenge all who dare listen.
Danielle Balbuena, who you may also know as 070 Shake, has always been one to pull you deep into her world, and her third album, PETRICHOR, is an even more immersive experience as it explores the themes of isolation and self-discovery with the atmospheric intensity only Balbuena can deliver. Inspired by classic film noir and the moody brilliance of Wong Kar-wai's Fallen Angels and Ingmar Bergman’s Persona, the singer/rapper has crafted a collection that feels cinematic and personal, and overflowing with emotional complexity.
The title PETRICHOR refers to that unique, earthy aroma of rain meeting dry soil, a sensory metaphor for renewal after barrenness. This theme runs through the album, capturing Balbuena’s fascination with reinvention, where we come from, and the hidden power within solitude. It’s a fitting title for a record steeped in both vulnerability and resistance, revealing a Shake who’s emerging from her own artistic drought to bloom in striking new ways.
The lead single, “Winter Baby / New Jersey Blues,” sets the tone of the album, embodying that bittersweet blend of memory and melancholy. Directed by Bennett Watanabe and featuring Balbuena's partner Lily-Rose Depp, the music video plays out like a film in itself, blending the singer's enigmatic presence with haunting visuals of empty streets and rain-soaked cityscapes. The track encapsulates her signature style - heavy yet nuanced, textured but hauntingly sparse.
Longtime collaborator Dave Hamelin served as executive producer, creating a backdrop that lets 070 Shake’s distinctive voice cut through with pure emotion. Tyler Johnson and Patrick Krief also brought their production skills, giving the album a unique mix of electronic minimalism and lush instrumental layers. Hamelin’s touch helps give PETRICHOR the feel of a carefully directed film, with each song unfolding like a scene.
Though still relatively new to the mainstream, 070 Shake’s impact has been pretty big. She first made waves with her 2020 debut, Modus Vivendi, and her recent collaboration with RAYE on the platinum-certified “Escapism” cast her into a wider spotlight. Just last year, she toured as the direct support for Coldplay, where her emotionally charged shows proved her ability to command a massive stage and connect with a diverse audience. On PETRICHOR, Danielle Balbuena fully into her evolution, with lyrics that channel the stark introspection of classic noir, and vocals blending yearning and defiance as she navigates themes of love, loneliness, and who we become from it.
