With Transmissions, Amos Lee delivers an album that’s both intimate and expansive, showcasing his signature songwriting and storytelling through a fresh approach to recording it.

Transmissions is a deeply personal album that addresses themes of death, aging, and love. Self-produced for only the second time in his career, Lee recorded the album live in the studio, capturing the raw, spontaneous energy of his band. He returned to an old-school recording approach, working with his longtime band in a studio in rural Marlboro, New York, built by drummer Lee Falco and his father from reclaimed wood from an old church. This back-to-basics approach resulted in a collection of twelve songs laid down in less than a week, featuring soulful, folk-funk arrangements that broaden the scope of Lee's music. The record's live recording process instills it with an authentic, unfiltered quality that perfectly complements Lee's introspective songwriting.

The album's first single, "Hold On Tight," is a graceful reflection on the importance of cherishing loved ones, paired with a simple yet moving music video by Anthony Mulcahy and James Delahunty. "Beautiful Day," the second single, dives into Lee's struggles with anxiety and self-acceptance, but comes out the other side with a message of resilience and understanding. The song showcases Lee's ability to convey heavy emotions with minimalistic lyrics, creating a connection with anyone familiar with the experience.

Lee describes Transmissions as a collection grappling with existential questions and personal growth. "There’s a lot of grappling with your place in the world, grappling with loss," Lee explains. "It’s about the balance between bailing out the boat and rowing at the same time." This introspection is evident in songs like "Carry You On," a heartfelt tribute to a young woman Lee met who was battling illness. The song, written for her and her twin sister, is an important reminder of the fleeting nature of life and the impact sincere love can have in it. As he continues to examine the complexities of life through his art, Lee remains a compelling voice in the world of music, giving listeners a comforting presence in uncertain times.
