On Songs My Father Would Dig, Bob Baldwin honors the legacy of his father by recording an album of his dad's favorite jazz musicians.

Bob Baldwin’s first straight-ahead jazz project features Richie Goods on bass, Tony Lewis on drums, and Café da Silva on percussion and honors the music of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Larry Willis, and Herbie Hancock. Reflecting on his inspirations, Baldwin shared, “My father was a Renaissance Man, a master of photography, music, and billiards. As a child, I absorbed his greatness, spending countless evenings in our living room, which was a sanctuary filled with the sounds of jazz legends like Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, and John Coltrane."

"Our living room," Baldwin continued, "with its piano, a couple of chairs, and a sophisticated stereo system, was where my love for music blossomed. I began playing the upright piano, immersing myself in classical pieces and jazz standards such as 'In a Sentimental Mood,' 'Misty,' and 'A Night in Tunisia.' Over fifty years later, I felt a deep desire to perform my father's favorite tunes. This journey led me to Samurai Studios, where I discovered a century-old piano with a tone as rich as liquid gold. Even though my father passed away in 2008, the recording session felt like a spiritual communion with him. It was as if he were present, guiding the music that became Songs My Father Would Dig.

"Adding to the emotional depth of this project was the participation of my late cousin, Larry Willis, a celebrated musician who played with Blood, Sweat & Tears and Hugh Masekela. We honored him with the track 'To Wisdom, The Prize,' ensuring his spirit was an integral part of our endeavor. Recording with Richie Goods, Tony Lewis, and Edson [Café] da Silva was an extraordinary experience. In the heart of Queens, with the memories of my father and cousin Larry surrounding us, we surrendered to the music, reaching transcendent heights.”
