Celebrated indie rock singer-songwriter Cat Power delivers another brilliant collection of covers of both well-known and lesser so-known songs. And again she succeeds marvelously at making them her own.
Chan Marshall (as Cat Power) returns with Covers, continuing her trend of paying homage to both contemporary and classic artists which began with 2000's The Covers Record and continued in 2008 with Jukebox.
Produced by Marshall, Covers features fully reimagined songs by Frank Ocean, Bob Seger, Lana Del Rey, Jackson Browne, Iggy Pop, The Pogues, Nick Cave, The Replacements, plus an updated rendition of her own song "Hate" from The Greatest (2006), retitled "Unhate" for this album. Perhaps due to the new world we now inhabit, her renditions tend to be more somber than the originals.
