Chicano Batman's Notebook Fantasy is a product of the power of imagination and the courage to break free from anything holding you back.
Named after the pastime of conjuring alternate realities within the pages of a notebook, the fifth album from Chicano Batman is an unfiltered barrage of creativity, honesty, and unconstrained musical exploration. Produced by John Congleton and recorded partly at Sunset Sound, Notebook Fantasy is a departure from the subtleties of their previous work, embracing a bold and punchy approach. "We wanted something big and clear that would still hold up stripped down to just a vocal and one instrument," explains Carolos Arévalo. Collaborating with over a dozen guest musicians, including string arranger Jherek Bischoff, Chicano Batman explores new alleys of their city-wide sound.
For Chicano Batman, the making of Notebook Fantasy was a test of trust and collaboration, a departure from past conflicts and individual agendas. "We allowed whoever started the track to direct the process," says Arévalo, reflecting on their newfound unity. The result is an album that reflects the joy, pain, and catharsis of truly working together while still allowing the individual to shine.
The album's standout track, "Parallels," is a special moment for the band as their first duet. Born from intense writing sessions where Bardo Martinez and Eduardo Arenas confronted past grievances, the song shows their willingness to travel into uncomfortable territory for the sake of their art. Throughout Notebook Fantasy, the band explores a vast landscape of emotions and influences, from the empowered meditation of "Live Today" to the lovestruck reverie of "Fly." Drawing inspiration from their Afro-Colombian roots and childhood memories, tracks like "Era Primavera" and "Lei Lá" burst with energy and infectious rhythms.
Since their early days rocking the stages of local dive bars to their recent co-headlining gig at the legendary Hollywood Bowl, vocalist/lyricist Bardo Martinez, guitarist Carlos Arévalo, and bassist Eduardo Arenas have been guided by what can only be described as visionary impulses. As they continue to capture audiences with their standout live performances, Chicano Batman remains committed to authenticity and self-expression. "We focused on getting our unique voice across with confidence and conviction," says Arenas. "We want to be so untouchable that no one can take our shine away."
