Colby Acuff's American Son is a breath of fresh air with its unfiltered honesty and overflowing amount of hope and heart.
Colby Acuff is back with American Son, a deeply personal and brutally honest album that captures the true essence of a man grappling with life's toughest challenges. Fresh off a grueling tour in 2023, Acuff found himself in a place of profound introspection. "Maybe it was the state of mind I was in, coming out of a grueling touring year," Acuff reflects. "My Dad was terminally ill. I was looking around, taking stock of a lot of things – and it put me in a very weird place. I started pouring a lot into the songs, being very brutally honest. I wanted to make a record that really said something."
With American Son, he does just that. Teaming up with producer and engineer Eddie Spear, known for his work with Zach Bryan and Brandi Carlile, Acuff has grinded out a 16-track album that delivers a powerful punch. And it may be acoustic-forward, but it’s anything but subdued. It’s something both ambient and unvarnished, capturing Acuff’s clarity in the midst of chaos. "It’s like a drop of bleach in greasy water," Acuff says of the album’s impact, "cutting through the noise to highlight the stark realities of an indulgent world that too often ignores the consequences."
Thematically, American Son tackles what Acuff describes as four pillars: the state of the union and humanity, mental health, hope, and love. "You can’t dive too deep into the darkness without those two things, or you’ll never get out," he explains. It’s a record that doesn’t shy away from the harsh truths but also refuses to let go of the light. Acuff’s songwriting is a reckoning, a call to acknowledge the world as it is while holding on to the things that keep us going.
American Son also features collaborations that elevate the album to another level. Notably, the song "How Do I Feel Alive" includes a hauntingly beautiful contribution from rising sibling trio the Castellows. Their harmonies bring a contrast to Acuff’s gritty delivery, creating a moment of pure, unfiltered emotion. Additionally, Acuff’s take on Leonard Cohen’s "Suzanne" is a standout, paying homage to the legendary songwriter while infusing the track with his own signature intensity. With American Son, Colby Acuff has delivered an album that’s as much a reflection of his personal struggles as it is a commentary on the world around us. It’s a powerful, unflinching look at life’s harshest realities, tempered by the hope and love that keep us all moving forward. In an industry often dominated by polish and production, Acuff’s unfiltered honesty is a breath of fresh air, proving once again that sometimes, the most powerful music comes from the most vulnerable places.
