Darren Pickering Small Worlds pushes the boundaries of jazz with Three, a cinematic fusion of lyrical melodies, through-composed improvisation, and electronic textures.
Darren Pickering Small Worlds, the Christchurch, New Zealand-based jazz quartet led by pianist Darren Pickering, continue their innovative journey into the fusion of jazz and cinematic textures with their latest release, Three. Following the critically acclaimed volumes of their previous works, 2022's Volume One and 2023's Volume Two, the ensemble further explores through-composed improvisations that blend lyrical melodies with the intricate soundscapes of modular synthesisers.
Led by Pickering on piano, the quartet comprises Jono Blackie on drums, Pete Fleming on bass, and Heather Webb on guitar. Their musical approach merges Pickering's compositions with re-imagined interpretations of diverse genres, unified by a cinematic flair heightened by electronic textures from his expansive collection of modular systems, synths, and sonic manipulation devices.
Three showcases Small Worlds' dedication to modern jazz harmony, characterized by shifting textures and solid improvisational structures. The quartet's artistic direction is a collaborative effort, with each member contributing equally to shape their distinct sound.
Influenced by luminaries such as Aaron Parks, Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band, and Ryuichi Sakamoto, Darren Pickering Small Worlds draws inspiration from a spectrum of artists known for their innovation in jazz and cinematic music. While exploring new territories, Three invites listeners into an immersive experience where improvisation meets evocative storytelling.
