Fifteen years in the making, Dream Theater return with Parasomnia, their long-awaited progressive odyssey.
Dream Theater returns with their sixteenth studio album, Parasomnia, a monumental release that reunites their most iconic lineup for the first time since 2009’s Black Clouds & Silver Linings. The progressive metal titans, now with drummer Mike Portnoy back in the fold, take us on an expansive, immersive sonic trip that reaffirms why they’ve been the gold standard of prog metal for four decades.
Produced by John Petrucci, engineered by Jimmy T Meslin, and mixed by Andy Sneap, Parasomnia is classic Dream Theater - cinematic in scope, technically jaw-dropping, and charged with emotion. From the haunting opener “In The Arms Of Morpheus” to the climactic closer “The Shadow Man Incident,” the band find their way through a labyrinth of challenging time signatures, intricate melodies, and stunning performances. Petrucci’s guitar work remains as searing and sophisticated as ever, while James LaBrie commands the mic with seasoned authority. Jordan Rudess’ keyboards add a dreamlike depth, John Myung’s bass lines are thunderous yet nimble, and Portnoy’s return behind the drums brings a magic potion to the band’s chemistry.
Clocking in at 71 minutes, Parasomnia takes listeners on a cerebral and spiritual pilgrimage, a testament to the band’s ability to write progressive epics that demand full immersion. “When you listen to this, we want you to feel like you’ve actually experienced these events with us,” says Petrucci. “This band is a brotherhood. After 40 years, that’s a legacy, a history, and a family.”
Beyond the music, Dream Theater fans can dive even deeper with a limited deluxe box set that includes a Dolby Atmos mix, instrumental versions, a dream journal, a Majesty-logo dream catcher keyring, and even a sleeping mask - a nod to the album’s dreamlike themes. With over 12 million records sold and a Grammy under their belt, Dream Theater’s legacy in progressive metal is undisputed. Parasomnia is another defining moment for Dream Theater, proof that four decades in, their fire still burns with the ferocity of one just lit.
