Durry's fantastic debut album, Suburban Legend, kicks off with a nostalgic sound - the old-school Internet dial-up tone. For songwriter Austin Durry, this sound is instantly familiar, but his sister and bandmate, Taryn, hadn't heard it before. Despite their age difference - Austin is a millennial, and Taryn is part of Gen Z - their collaborations highlight the common ground between generations.
Their journey began unexpectedly during the COVID pandemic when Austin and his wife moved back to his parents' house where Taryn was also living. The canceled tour with Austin's previous band gave him time to write songs, with Taryn providing input, often referred to playfully as "Gen Z quality control."
As Durry took shape, the siblings embraced a DIY approach, handling branding, promotion, and creating their own content. Their visual style, characterized by golden yellow tones, bold fonts, and tactile images, translated into eye-catching merchandise.
Their musical partnership led to the creation of the pop-punk/alternative track "Who's Laughing Now," capturing the frustrations of young adulthood in 2023. After posting an unfinished version on TikTok, the song resonated with millions, accumulating over four million Spotify streams. The song, alongside other influences like Weezer, Sum 41, and the Killers, finds its place in their debut album, Suburban Legend.
Produced by Austin and engineered by collaborator Jack Vondrachek, the album comprises 12 energetic songs exploring themes of suburbia, capitalism, ambition, mental health, and Taco Bell. The title itself plays on the concept of a "suburban legend," aiming to create a unique and epic narrative within an everyday setting.
Taryn and Austin's upbringing in a musical family, homeschooled by their art and music teacher parents, laid the foundation for their creative journey. Despite limited exposure to mainstream music as kids, their musical style blends pop melodies with intricate storytelling, akin to old-school country songs layered with rock music.
Throughout Suburban Legend, Durry covers a range of topics, maintaining relatability throughout. The album caters to both millennials and Gen Z, providing nostalgia for the former and contemporary anthems for the latter, uniting the two generations through music.
