Fu Manchu return with enough riffs to power a time machine and look into the future by way of the past on The Return Of Tomorrow.

After a six-year break, Fu Manchu is back like the big bang. And it’s like they’re making up for the lost time, because The Return Of Tomorrow is their first double LP of all new material. A double dose of fuzz and jams to fill your ears and feed your soul. The first LP is a powerhouse, featuring the kind of heavy fuzz madness you’ve come to love from the band. The lead single, "Hands Of The Zodiac," sets the tone with its gritty riffs, something this band never has a shortage of, while "Loch Ness Wrecking Machine" beats you over the head with its relentless catchiness. It’s classic Fu Manchu, and you will never convince me that Scott Hill’s voice doesn’t sound like prime Ace Frehley. Always has and always will, and I will die on this hill.

The second LP takes a different turn, coming down to earth a bit with six street level jams, showing the Fu dudes aren’t simple one trick ponies. Tracks like "Solar Baptized" bring in some synth elements, creating a hypnotic vibe, and the title track, "The Return Of Tomorrow," takes on a more reflective and mellow feeling. Overall, the record has the aura of a band peeking into the past while looking into the future.

Recorded at the Racket Room in Santa Ana, California, The Return Of Tomorrow has the band working again with engineer Jim Monroe, known for his work with Adolescents and Ignite. Co-produced by Monroe and the band, the album benefits from their combined knowledge and comfort being around each other once again. As Fu Manchu re-emerge with The Return Of Tomorrow, they reaffirm their status as masters of heavy rock, and as one of the original first wave stoner rock bands who helped launch the genre in the early '90s. Good things are worth waiting for, and this album is undoubtedly one of the best things to come out so far in 2024.

Designed to be a vinyl listening experience, The Return Of Tomorrow is proof of the band’s love for the past’s (and present’s?) greatest format. As they often do, Fu Manchu made this release a vinyl lover’s dream. The limited-edition album, with only 4,000 copies available, comes in a glossy gatefold jacket with printed sleeves featuring live photos of the band, and has one "Space" colored LP and one "Sky" colored LP, a visually stunning package overall. While the vinyl edition is the star of the show, CD lovers haven’t been forgotten, as the album was also mastered specifically for that format, ensuring that every fan can dig the record no matter what decade you prefer listening to it in.
