Modesto, California's Grandaddy return with their sixth studio album, Blu Wav, the title serving as a literal mash-up of "bluegrass" and "new wave," reflecting the album's distinct fusion of genres.
Led by the prolific storyteller Jason Lytle, Grandaddy seamlessly blends the overwhelming beauty of nature with the mundane moments that shape life's most enduring memories. In a bold departure, Blu Wav introduces pedal steel into the band's stockpile of sound for the first time, adding a significant twist to what they normally do.
The album's lead single, "Watercooler," serves as commentary on the dichotomy between outdoor adventure and the confines of office life. Lytle, drawing from personal experience, reflects on the end of relationships shaped by contrasting lifestyles. "Most of my relationships have involved girls who worked in office settings," he shares. "This song is about the end of one, or perhaps a few, of those relationships."
Inspired by a chance encounter with Patti Page's "Tennessee Waltz" while driving through the Nevada desert, Lytle envisioned a sound that combines the slow sway of bluegrass waltzes with layers of dense synthesizers and electronic textures of new wave. The result is a collection of songs that seamlessly blend Grandaddy's signature lo-fi lushness with Lytle's first foray into true country. With seven of its 13 tracks being waltzes, and an abundance of pedal steel, Blu Wav reinvents the band's usual sound.
Grandaddy's return comes on the heels of a celebrated legacy, marked by a series of 20th-anniversary reissues and critical acclaim for their acclaimed box set Sumday Twunny. Additionally, Lytle's contribution to a posthumous Sparklehorse album underscores his status as a revered figure in the psychedelic pop landscape. With five official LPs under their belt, including 2017's Last Place, Grandaddy continues to challenge audiences with their unmistakable sound and unwavering creativity. As the band pays tribute to the late Kevin Garcia, who tragically passed away in 2017, they embark on a new chapter with Blu Wav, reaffirming their status as indie-rock pioneers by always pushing boundaries.
