Salt Lake City’s underground stoner rock legends, iota, return with pentasomnia, their first album in over 15 years.
It's been almost 16 years since Salt Lake City's iota made their mark in the heavy underground scene with their debut album, Tales. The album showcased their innovative and captivating blend of heavy rock. Despite the promising start, the band members pursued other projects, gaining a cult following over the years.
The new album, featuring the talents of new drummer Andy Patterson along with original guitarist/vocalist Joey Toscano and bassist Oz Inglorious, is a collection of five dreams that mark the band's long-awaited return. This project, initiated by Toscano around 2001, has seen periods of dormancy and resurgence, but the sound remains atmospheric and emotionally resonant, characterized by Toscano's bluesy vocals. Pentasomnia is not just a patched together follow-up to their debut; it's a cohesive and unexpected step forward. The album, written and recorded live between 2018 and 2019, reflects the challenges and complexities faced by the band, including family health emergencies, other projects, a pandemic, and the general chaos of life.
The five songs on pentasomnia showcase iota's groove and sway, from the opening track "The Intruder" to the ambient "The Returner," embodying the cosmic and desert rock fusion that defined the band's early days. According to Toscano, each song represents a different mental state, challenging conventional notions of identity and self. He describes pentasomnia as an amalgamation, offering a cathartic acknowledgment of our small place in the vast musical landscape.
Despite the tumultuous years and various life events, iota has managed to regroup, renew their sound, and emphasize the importance of their collaboration. Their sophomore album is a testament to their evolution from a basement band into a unique blend of melody and psychedelic bliss. With a history of live shows that range from high-speed madness to crushing space jams, iota's contribution to the heavy rock scene in 2024 should not be underestimated. Established in 2002, the band has consistently delivered a spaced-out rock 'n' roll experience, blending blues, vintage psych guitar rock, and a touch of metal.
