On the album, Isbell bares his soul, sharing his confessions, reflections, and commitments that engage with and connect to those who came before us and continue to influence our lives. The album's twelve tracks serve as a prolonged exploration of the idea famously expressed by fellow southern storyteller William Faulkner: "The past is never truly gone; it remains with us in the present."
The new deluxe 3CD/4LP sets offer an enhanced experience, featuring updated artwork, a booklet containing previously unreleased photos and lyrics, the original album remastered, and additional content such as demos and live versions of each album track recorded live at Knoxville's Bijou Theatre in December 2022.
