Jeannie Piersol’s The Nest finally shines a light on her overlooked fusion of psychedelic rock, soul, and Indian grooves from the late ’60s San Francisco scene.

While the late 1960s San Francisco rock scene is enshrined in music lore, Jeannie Piersol remains one of its best-kept secrets. Now, her kaleidoscopic blend of rock, soul, and Indian-inspired grooves finally gets the spotlight it deserves on The Nest, a meticulously curated anthology from High Moon Records.

Piersol’s journey through the musical underbelly of the Bay Area is the stuff of legend—if only more people knew the story. Emerging from the same fertile community that birthed Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, and Big Brother and the Holding Company, she struck a chord with her distinctive vocal style and enigmatic stage presence. Piersol's close friendship with Grace Slick and early collaborations with the Great!! Society!! hinted at her potential. But it was her own ventures, fronting the Yellow Brick Road and later Hair, that allowed her artistry to fully bloom.

In 1968, Piersol and her bandmate Darby Slick (fresh off studying sarod in India) infused her sound with global influences, merging psychedelic soul and Indian textures. Signed to Chess Records’ hip Cadet Concept label, she recorded two striking singles in Chicago, including the mesmerizing “The Nest” and the fuzz-drenched anthem “Your Sweet Inner Self.” Despite critical acclaim and modest airplay, the tracks failed to break commercially, leaving Piersol's story unfinished—until now.

The Nest gathers these elusive singles alongside outtakes, demos, and live recordings from San Francisco’s iconic Matrix nightclub, capturing the raw energy of Piersol’s bands in their prime. It’s a fascinating time capsule of her brief but impactful career, enhanced by a lush 16-page booklet featuring rare photos and a detailed essay by Grammy-nominated producer Alec Palao.

For fans of Jefferson Airplane, the Great!! Society!!, and Rotary Connection, The Nest is more than a curiosity—it’s a revelation. Jeannie Piersol’s voice and vision finally step out of the shadows, offering a fresh perspective on the golden age of psychedelic rock.
