Born in the countryside near Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, Joan Soriano fashioned his first guitar from a tin can and fishing line and has never looked back. He plays steel string bachata with romance and grit. Afro-infused rhythms permeate his music, making him a favorite among dancers.
Soriano was featured on the Rough Guide To Bachata, and he is the subject of a new documentary film by Adam Taub, The Duke Of Bachata, included here as a bonus DVD.
'It's a story as old as the guitar, which has been played in Santo Domingo, the first Spanish city in the New World, since before the guitar had six strings. Yanquis are about to get a taste of beautiful bitterness.'
- Ned Sublette, author Cuba and its Music.
