Being part of a new wave of vibrant young artists reshaping today's blues, New Jersey's Katie Henry has truly captured my attention. Her breakout release, On My Way, garnered critical acclaim, securing her a spot on Blues Rock Review’s coveted Top 20 Albums of 2022 list. Yet, looking back, that album merely skimmed the surface of her talent.
On her new album, Get Goin', Henry showcases an even deeper layer of her artistry. Plunging into uncharted musical territory, she effortlessly rises to the challenge. With the backing of Bernard Allison and his band, who not only produced the album but also contributed to it what he does best, Henry elevates her craft to new heights.
Reflecting on the recording sessions with the band in the fall of 2023, Henry shared, “Not only are they amazing top notch players, they are also good people with big hearts. They really support and believe in me, which means so much to me and my growth as an artist. I was inspired by them throughout the whole process.”
For Henry, Get Goin' marks a significant milestone in a journey that commenced when she first discovered the magic of piano chords at the tender age of six. As she expanded her musical repertoire to include the guitar and ventured into the vibrant New York City scene during her college years, her eclectic blend of influences began to take shape. This stylistic fusion, encompassing blues, rock, R&B, funk, pop, soul, and country, continues to define her music today.
Her earlier releases, such as the universally acclaimed High Road in 2018 and the Billboard-charting On My Way, laid the groundwork for her partnership with Germany’s Ruf Records and her participation in their Blues Caravan tour. Sharing stages with fellow boundary-pushing artists like Ghalia Volt and Will Jacobs allowed her to refine her skills in real-time, captivating audiences worldwide.
