Kendrick Lamar redefines west coast hip-hop with GNX with help from SZA, Roddy Ricch, YoungThreat, and Deyra Barrera.

Kendrick Lamar’s GNX is once again a cultural moment. Originally dropping out of nowhere digitally in November, and now available physically, GNX marks Lamar’s first release post-Top Dawg Entertainment and Aftermath Entertainment, and the start of a new chapter under PGLang and Interscope. Titled after the Buick Regal model, GNX is an ode to Los Angeles, packed with classic west coast stylings, contemporary twists, and an all-star guest lineup.

With appearances from SZA, Roddy Ricch, YoungThreat, and regional Mexican music standout Deyra Barrera, GNX bridges genres and eras, proving once again that Lamar’s vision knows no limits. Sonically, the album leans heavily into G-funk, infused with mariachi and jazz influences, thanks in part to production from Sounwave, Jack Antonoff, Mustard, and Kamasi Washington. It’s a showcase for Lamar’s ability to celebrate his roots while continuing to push hip-hop into the future.

The album’s 12 tracks clock in at 44 minutes and 20 seconds, making it Lamar’s shortest full-length release to date. Despite its brevity, GNX leaves a lasting impact. Lead single “Squabble Up” sets the tone, while “TV Off” became an instant fan favorite, largely due to its unexpected switch from clipped strings to Viking-berserker horns - an audacious production choice that has since sparked viral memes. Another of the album’s standout moments comes on “Reincarnated,” where Lamar channels the spirits of John Lee Hooker and Billie Holiday before transitioning into a conversation with God. Meanwhile, “Heart Pt. 6” finds him reflecting on his history with Top Dog Entertainment and the dissolution of Black Hippy, subtly addressing his ongoing rivalry with Drake without directly engaging in diss-track theatrics. The title track, “GNX,” is a hard-hitting posse cut featuring Peysoh, Hitta J3, and YoungThreat, where Lamar takes a step back, opting to deliver a hook that asks, “Who put the West back in front of shit?”

While much of mainstream hip-hop leans on fleeting trends over substance, GNX reaffirms Kendrick Lamar’s dedication to innovation. It’s a bold, genre-defying album that solidifies his place as one of hip-hop’s most vital voices.
