Slovenian provocateurs Laibach turn their sound upside down to redefine their classic album Opus Dei on Opus Dei Revisited.

Few bands embrace reinvention as boldly as Laibach. With Opus Dei Revisited, the collective take their groundbreaking 1987 album Opus Dei and flip it on its head, delivering a fresh and fearless reinterpretation. The double vinyl and CD collection continues their 12-month celebration of the iconic album. The original Opus Dei, Laibach’s first release on Mute Records, was the origin story for their reputation as one of the most enigmatic and innovative acts to emerge from Eastern Europe. With tracks like “Leben heißt Leben” - their haunting German-language rendition of Opus’ “Live Is Life” - the album fused martial industrial beats with philosophical subversion, capturing worldwide acclaim and controversy in equal measure.

Opus Dei Revisited takes this legacy further. The first disc finds Laibach themselves reimagining the album for their ongoing Opus Dei Revisited Tour. These new versions, painstakingly crafted and refined, push the boundaries of their original compositions, offering an immersive experience that’s both nostalgic and future-thinking. Capturing the energy of their live performances, the band entered the studio immediately after Phase 1 of the tour, eager to immortalize their latest interpretations.

For the second disc, Laibach enlisted the expertise of Rico Conning - the original producer and mixer behind the 1987 album. Known for his work with avant-garde heroes like Wire, Swans, and Front 242, Conning revisits the master tapes with an open mandate to deconstruct and reimagine. The result is an exciting auditory exploration that amplifies the album’s core themes while presenting them in new and unexpected contexts. Conning’s contributions emphasize both the grandeur and grit of Opus Dei, balancing familiar motifs with strikingly innovative frameworks.

Laibach’s journey has been anything but conventional. Formed in Trbovlje, Yugoslavia, the band faced censorship and bans within their homeland. Yet, they persisted, embarking on the Occupied Europe Tour, recording a BBC Peel Session, and even appearing in Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket. From their North Korean performances documented in the documentary Liberation Day to their avant-garde interpretations of The Sound Of Music and the Beatles' Let It Be, Laibach has always defied categorization. With Opus Dei Revisited, they not only honor their past but also challenge fans to rethink what a classic album can become.
