Lalah Hathaway is back with VANTABLACK, a soulful fusion of love and identity. Guests include Common, Gerald Albright, Willow, and MC Lyte.

Lalah Hathaway, a five-time Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and producer, is descended from music royalty. The daughter of soul legend Donny Hathaway, she’s put together her own remarkable career, blending R&B, pop, and soulful jazz into her signature sound. VANTABLACK's lead single, "So In Love," has already made waves, becoming the No. 1 most added song at Adult R&B radio upon its release. Co-written with Philip Beaudreau, the track was originally intended to be pitched to other artists. However, its special vibe and exploration of non-traditional love themes prompted Hathaway to keep it for herself.

The concept of VANTABLACK holds significant meaning for Hathaway, embodying something deep and complex. “The word itself has so much weight on it,” she reflects. “At the time, what I thought were conflicting perspectives began to shape the concept of not only this album but also how I saw myself.” The album represents a reframing of color and identity, embracing her Blackness while acknowledging the diverse influences that inform her music. It’s a melting pot of sounds and ideas, with each song having its own unique flavor.

Since her debut in 1990, Lalah Hathaway has produced a string of chart-topping singles and critically acclaimed albums. Her collaborations with stars like Mary J. Blige, Stevie Wonder, Prince, and Kendrick Lamar have cemented her status as a powerhouse in the music world. Known for her spectacular live shows, Hathaway’s performances showcase her rich and powerful vocals, tinged with a knowing vulnerability that connects with audiences.

Her career achievements are numerous. Hathaway has enjoyed regular successes on the Billboard 200 and R&B charts, including a No. 1 hit on the Hot Adult R&B Airplay chart with her cover of Luther Vandross’s “Forever, for Always, For Love” in 2004. In 2015, her album Lalah Hathaway Live reached No. 2 on the R&B Albums chart and won the Grammy for Best R&B Album in 2016, making history as the first concert recording to win the prize. Beyond her musical accolades, Hathaway is a dedicated advocate for worthy causes. She’s raised funds and awareness for the African-American breast cancer organization Circle Of Promise and mentored students through the Elevate Hope Foundation, which supports abused and abandoned children through music and art therapy.
