Amidst the turmoil of a global pandemic, Mark Knopfler's career hit pause like many of ours did. Yet, he emerged from it with a resolute spirit, which lead to his latest masterpiece, One Deep River.
Following the much-lauded release of 2018's Down The Road Wherever, Knopfler embarked on a lengthy tour in 2019, captivating audiences worldwide until the abrupt halt forced by the pandemic's onset. However, even in seclusion, Knopfler continued to nurture his creative flame, eagerly awaiting the reunion with his trusted ensemble at the revered British Grove Studios.
One Deep River is Knopfler's sixth consecutive studio album crafted within the hallowed halls of British Grove, a testament to his enduring affinity for the studio's ambiance and collaborative spirit. With longtime compadres like Richard Bennett, Jim Cox, Danny Cummings, and Glenn Worf, alongside the newest addition, Greg Leisz, converging, the studio sessions brimmed with anticipation and camaraderie.
Reflecting on the album's genesis, Knopfler muses, "It’s been a long process, this one, hasn’t it? For obvious reasons, patience has been required, just because of Covid lockdowns. I love working on my own, and I love working at home and writing the songs. But you live for the days when the band are together." As melodies took shape and lyrics unfolded, each member contributed their distinct hue to the album, weaving a narrative of timeless allure and introspection.
Throughout the album, Knopfler's signature craftsmanship shines, embracing a spectrum of influences spanning blues, folk, and rock. From the funky grooves of "Two Pairs Of Hands" to the evocative storytelling of "Tunnel 13," each track resonates with a richness that belies its meticulous construction.
The album's titular track, a poignant homage to Knopfler's formative years by the Tyne River, encapsulates the artist's enduring connection to his roots. Meanwhile, "Ahead Of The Game" pays homage to his musical journey, underscoring the resilience required to navigate the tumultuous landscape of the industry.
With One Deep River, Knopfler reaffirms his commitment to the craft, channeling his boundless passion into a collection of songs that transcend time and genre.
