At long last, MGMT's new album Loss Of Life has arrived. The duo's first album since 2018 includes guest vocalist, Christine and the Queens.
Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, collectively known as MGMT, have again joined forces with producer Patrick Wimberly to make one of the best new albums of the year, Loss Of Life. Notably, the album features MGMT's first-ever collaboration with Christine and the Queens on the track "Dancing in Babylon."
Loss Of Life signals MGMT's move to a new record label, the independently proud Mom+Pop, following a long stint with Columbia Records. The album's lead single, "Mother Nature," blends guitar and synth elements to create a sound that transitions from nostalgic to anthemic, reflecting MGMT's distinct musical style.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, MGMT discussed the creative journey that unfolded during the Loss Of Life sessions, expressing their satisfaction with the album and the relatively smooth process from conception to completion. They humorously described their musical direction as aiming for "around 20% adult contemporary," emphasizing a desire to maintain balance.
Meanwhile, The Best Show co-host Tom Scharpling praised the album in an essay, noting its warmth, confidence, and the band's ability to expand their sonic boundaries while remaining true to themselves. With each track offering a mix of grand moments and personal reflections, Loss Of Life is a much-welcomed addition to MGMT's catalog.
Since their formation in 2002, MGMT has been known for pushing musical boundaries and captivating audiences with their diverse sound and thought-provoking lyrics. From their Grammy-nominated debut Oracular Spectacular to their latest work, the band continues to evolve and explore new musical territories.
