Now out on vinyl, Mildlife's Chorus invites listeners to discover deep layers of musical innovation and experimentation.
With their third album, the Melbourne-based quartet Mildlife seamlessly intertwine individual expression with collective harmony, offering listeners a musical journey that traverses both the microcosm of personal introspection and the macro view of cosmic connectivity.
From the ethereal melodies to the pulsating rhythms, the album embodies the band's ethos of musical symbiosis. Each track serves as a testament to the band's unwavering devotion to the psychedelic and cosmic sounds of the '70s, while also weaving in influences ranging from Polish jazz to Italo disco.
At the heart of Chorus lies the band's collective spirit, embodied by Adam Halliwell, Kevin McDowell, Jim Rindfleish, and Tom Shanahan. With no designated leader, Mildlife operates as a cohesive unit, propelled by intuitive waves of creativity. “Chorus is about a coming together of disparate elements. Not in some sort of utopian aesthetic where everything works perfectly, but in the natural flow and state of things,” explained Rindfleish. “It’s about cosmic compatibility and chemistry: what makes things work? Not just what makes the band work, but what makes good music, art, or love? It's the rhythm of nature.”
Through velvety bass lines, luminous guitar riffs, hushed vocals, and intricate percussion, Mildlife have created a musical landscape where the boundaries between individual and ensemble blur, inviting listeners to get swept up in the collective flow.
But Chorus is more than just an album; it's a testament to the band's evolution and growth. Said Shanahan, “It’s knowing that all the pieces of our own puzzles can slot neatly into a bigger one." It's a creative revelation that speaks to the band's confidence in their collective voice, marking a departure from their previous works while retaining the essence of what makes Mildlife truly unique. From extended encores to improvisational passages, the album captures the essence of Mildlife's live performances - a reflection of the band's journey, a culmination of hours spent in improvisation, touring, and studio time.
