Moe. reflect on decades of their ever-evolving sound on Circle Of Giants, and its a proper celebration of their lasting spirit and the community they’ve built.
Moe., the enduring giants of jam rock, return with their 14th studio album, Circle Of Giants - a collection of songs that reflect their growth and the unshakable bond they’ve built with each other and their fans over the past three decades. With introspective lyrics, masterful instrumentation, and the signature dynamic energy that’s become their hallmark, Circle Of Giants shows the band’s innate ability to thrive in the face of adversity.
The lead single, “Ups And Downs,” is a fitting introduction to the album’s introspective yet uplifting tone. Written by bassist and vocalist Rob Derhak, the song was born during the pandemic, a period that forced the band to hit pause on what had always been a relentless touring schedule. For Derhak, it was a time of reflection and experimentation. “Ups And Downs” captures the essence of moe.’s ability to weave personal storytelling with universal themes. The track’s driving rhythm and layered harmonies feel both nostalgic and forward-looking, allowing listeners to reflect on their own journeys while celebrating the beauty in life’s imperfections. “This song was born out of a 2020 experiment,” Derhak shares. “With everything paused and the future of touring up in the air, I dove into recording from home and started exploring new creative ideas. One day, I got a unique request from a man who wanted a song to capture the story of his relationship with his wife. His words really struck me, especially when he said, ‘Like anyone else, we’ve had our ups and downs.’ That line sparked something, and soon I was pulling from my own experiences to bring this song together.”
Throughout Circle Of Giants, moe. showcase the musical synergy that has kept them at the forefront of the jam band scene. From intricate guitar solos to pulsating basslines and soaring harmonies, each track offers a reminder of the band’s technical ability and collective chemistry. Yet, what truly sets this album apart is its depth. Tracks like “Through The Years” and “Unbroken” explore themes of perseverance and gratitude, while “Beyond The Horizon” embraces the uncertainty of the future with open arms. Three decades in, moe. is still finding new ways to push their limits while staying true to their roots. With Circle Of Giants, they remind us that life, like music, is a journey full of ups and downs, but it’s the willingness to keep going forward that defines us.
