Stoner metal pioneers Orange Goblin want you to find the truth on Science, Not Fiction, and the truth is, as always, that heavy metal rules.
Originally emerging from London’s gritty streets under the name Our Haunted Kingdom way back in 1995, UK metal titans Orange Goblin have been fervently channeling the fire and fury of their favorite bands to make them one of yours for nearly three decades. Born into the heady swirl of the mid-‘90s stoner rock and doom explosion, they officially burst onto the scene with their debut album Frequencies From Planet Ten in 1997.
From these humble beginnings, the quartet carved out a loyal following, sharing stages with legendary acts such as Alice Cooper, Danzig, and Heaven & Hell, to name a few. Their ascent has been marked by a slew of critically acclaimed and revered albums, from early classics like Time Travelling Blues and The Big Black to more recent triumphs such as 2012’s A Eulogy For The Damned, 2014's Back From The Abyss, and 2018’s lauded The Wolf Bites Back. Fast forward to 2021, when Orange Goblin launched a new era of metal chaos by signing with Peaceville Records. Long-standing members Ben Ward, Joe Hoare, and Chris Turner also welcomed new bassist Harry Armstrong into the fold, setting the stage for their next chapter.
The first fruits of this powerful union manifest in the new album, Science, Not Fiction. This latest opus (and it just feels right to call this one an “opus”) is an absorbing exploration and exploitation of the world through the lenses of science, spirituality, and religion, examining how these fundamental forces shape and affect the human condition. Articulated through the powerful and commanding vocals of Ben Ward, it’s all backed by Orange Goblin’s hooky yet deceptively intricate brand of Sabbath-ian heavy metal rumble.
Recorded at Woodworm Studios UK in late 2023, Science, Not Fiction was produced and mixed by Mike Exeter, known for his work with Sabbath and Judas Priest, ensuring a polished yet hard-hitting recording. Orange Goblin’s latest album reaffirms their status in netal, proving that after nearly three decades, their creative fire burns hotter than ever. Science, Not Fiction is not just a metal album, it’s a lesson worth learning about what’s real… and what’s not… in the world around us.
