Red Fang draw blood on Deep Cuts, a 20-year look back at the true warriors of the riff who’ve never forgotten that the fuzz reigns supreme.
For two decades, Red Fang have been a wrecking ball of beer-soaked, riff-heavy mayhem. Now, the Portland sludge-rockers are celebrating 20 years of sonic destruction with Deep Cuts, a career-spanning collection of B-sides, rarities, and non-album tracks that highlights heir rise from underground cult heroes to cornerstone of American hard rock.
Deep Cuts is a full-throttle investigation into the band’s grimy, groove-laden DNA. It brings together fan-favorite deep tracks, including the vinyl debut of “Antidote,” which first appeared in the band’s mobile game Red Fang: Headbang!. Longtime fans also get their first taste of an early demo of the band’s classic track “Wires,” alongside cover songs paying homage to Wipers, No Talent, Dust, and Tubeway Army.
Red Fang, comprised of guitarist-vocalists Bryan Giles and Aaron Beam, guitarist David Sullivan, and drummer John Sherman, have always operated with one foot in the sludge and another in the absurd. They’ve built their reputation not only on pummeling, down-tuned anthems but also on a string of hilariously over-the-top music videos directed by Whitey McConnaughy. Whether they were blowing their entire budget on beer in “Prehistoric Dog” or crafting DIY battle armor in “Wires,” the band’s sense of humor has always been as integral as their bone-rattling riffs.
Since their inception, Red Fang have followed a simple formula: no-frills, heavy-as-hell rock that sticks to your skull like a bar brawl memory. From their self-titled 2009 debut to 2011’s Murder The Mountains, 2013’s Whales And Leeches, and beyond, they’ve built their own house of rock somewhere between classic stoner and bruising hardcore.
Deep Cuts serves as both a history lesson and a reminder of what makes Red Fang tick - the fuzz-drenched riffs, primal grooves, and a relentless commitment to keeping rock 'n’ roll fun. It’s a love letter to the fans who’ve been crushing cans and banging heads since day one, and all those picked up along the way. Deep Cuts is a fitting retrospective for a band that’s never compromised, never conformed, and never failed at melting faces.
