In a touching union of cinematic brilliance and musical mastery, the soundtrack for the film Killers Of The Flower Moon bears the soul-stirring imprint of the late Robbie Robertson.
Killers Of The Flower Moon serves as the final opus of Robbie Robertson’s prolific collaboration with film maestro Martin Scorsese, overall their 11th time working together. Robertson, who spent much of his formative years on the Six Nations Reserve within his mother's Mohawk community, interlaces an emotionally charged musical mosaic that authentically resonates with the film's narrative.
Killers Of The Flower Moon, an epic western crime saga, unfolds a tale where genuine love confronts unspeakable betrayal. Rooted in a true story and inspired by the New York Times bestselling book, the film traces the ominous murders of Osage Nation members, who, overnight, transformed into some of the world's wealthiest individuals following the discovery of oil beneath their land. The film stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert de Niro and premiered in October, also unveiling Robertson's resonant score.
Robertson, reflecting on the project before he passed away in August of 2023 shared, "I feel that the score is unexpected in many ways and authentic to the heart of the story. For me, it's kind of perfection to be able to go all the way around this big circle." His journey, commencing on the Six Nations Indian Reserve, has circled back to a poignant intersection of his musical roots and Scorsese's visionary storytelling.
Robertson dove into a meticulous research process at the film's inception, immersing himself in a expedition that led him back to his indigenous roots. He reminisced, "My relatives are all sitting around with their instruments, and one guy would start a rhythm, and then somebody would start singing a melody to that, and it was just haunting." This haunting resonance of Six Nations' music, coupled with Robertson's exploration of the Osage Nation's musical heritage and a deep dive into the popular tunes of the 1920s, became the wellspring for the film's score.
Describing the process as creating a "jukebox of music selections," Robertson collaborated closely with Scorsese, crafting a soundtrack that intricately mirrors the film's narrative beats. Killers Of The Flower Moon carries not just the weight of a cinematic narrative but the soulful echoes of Robbie Robertson's final symphony, a fitting crescendo to an unparalleled artistic life.
