Sean Khan blends folk revival with jazz innovation as he Presents The Modern Folk & Jazz Ensemble. Guests include Rosie Frater-Taylor, Jacqui McShee of Pentangle, and Kindelan.

Saxophone specialist Sean Khan is back with an electrifying project that marries the worlds of folk revival and jazz. His latest album, Presents The Modern Folk & Jazz Ensemble, gets deep into the rich sounds of the late '60s and early '70s folk revival, reinterpreting them through a jazz lens. Featuring songs by artists including Pentangle, Sandy Denny, John Martyn, and Nick Drake, the album shows off Khan's ability to look far into the future while paying homage to the past.

The album kicks off with the single "Solid Air," featuring the remarkable Rosie Frater-Taylor, setting the tone for an album that bridges eras and genres. Frater-Taylor, known for her critically acclaimed album Featherweight, brings her unique style to Khan's project, blending seamlessly with his jazz works. Joining Frater-Taylor on the album is Jacqui McShee, the lead singer of Pentangle, whose voice is synonymous with the original folk movement. Her collaboration on the single “I’ve Got A Feeling” showcases her timeless vocals against Khan's modern jazz backdrop. Another highlight is the haunting rendition of Nick Drake’s "Parasite," featuring emerging artist Kindelan from the Leeds folk and jazz scene. Kindelan’s evocative voice adds a fresh layer to the classic track.

Sean Khan, one of the UK’s premier saxophonists, leads this project with the same passion he conjured for his previous work, Supreme Love: A Journey Through John Coltrane. His distinctive saxophone playing threads through the album, connecting the emotional depth of folk with the improvisational spirit of jazz. But Presents The Modern Folk & Jazz Ensemble isn’t just a collection of covers, it's a reimagining of a golden era in music, seen through the eyes of a modern jazz master. Khan’s reinterpretations breathe new life into classics, updating them for today’s audiences while preserving their original essence. It’s a journey through time, guided by Khan’s saxophone wizardry and the powerful voices of his guests. With his innovative arrangements, Khan successfully bridges the gap between the soulful introspection of Nick Drake and the spiritual intensity of Coltrane.
