Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Sheryl Crow defies her own predictions and continues to grow with the release of her 11th studio album, Evolution. Guests include Tom Morello and Peter Gabriel.

If you didn't already know, Sheryl Crow had publicly signaled her reluctance to release another full-length album after 2018's Threads, which is what makes Evolution such a welcome surprise. Produced by Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Maroon 5, Keith Urban, Gary Clark Jr.), the album features nine new songs that showcase Crow's continued growth as a singer and songwriter.

The album kicks off with the lead single, "Alarm Clock," a catchy tune that reminds one of her 2002 hit "Soak Up The Sun." Co-written with Elizondo and Emily Weisband, the song narrates the abrupt transition from a blissful dream to the harsh reality of waking up, accentuated by Elizondo's sparkling production. Crow's decision to work with Elizondo stemmed from her desire to relinquish control and explore new avenues, and their easy rapport and shared musical sensibilities have shaped the album's sound into something special.

The title track, "Evolution," is what really sets the tone for the album, addressing Crow's concerns about artificial intelligence and its implications for humanity. Reflecting on the uncertainties surrounding A.I. and its potential impact on future generations, Crow explores these anxieties through intense lyrics and cinematic production. The track features a monolithic guitar solo by Rage Against The Machine’s Tom Morello, adding a dimension of urgency and ferocity to Crow's message. Another standout track is "Don't Walk Away," showcasing Crow's vulnerability and introspection as she grapples with personal and existential challenges. The haunting ballad, recorded in a single take with Crow on vocals and piano, captures the raw emotion of the moment, with Elizondo expertly building the track around her demo performance. Crow's humanity shines through in every note, offering solace to listeners navigating their own struggles.

The genesis of the album can be traced back to Peter Gabriel's 1992 hit "Digging In The Dirt," serving as the catalyst for Crow's decision to make a new album. Reflecting on this pivotal moment, Crow shares, "Peter's song sparked the entire creative process behind my latest album. It was the initial piece I brought to Mike Elizondo, and its exploration of self-examination deeply resonated with me." Exploring themes of introspection and self-awareness, Crow emphasizes the significance of understanding our vulnerabilities and their impact on our lives. She elaborates, "The notion of digging deep into our own psyche, confronting our wounds and imperfections, and ultimately finding healing struck a chord with me. It's a messy process, much like digging in the dirt, yet inherently transformative." Gabriel's collaboration on the track adds a layer of reverence and authenticity, with Crow expressing, "Having Peter lend his extraordinary vocal talents to this song is truly humbling. His performance elevates its emotional depth, making it even more meaningful to me. There's simply no one else like him in the world."

Overall, Evolution represents Sheryl Crow at her most introspective. Despite her initial reluctance to record another album, we’re glad she did, because Crow's songs speak from a deep soul place, resonating on a profound level.
