Alt-folk duo Smoke Fairies, flying high from the success of their acclaimed 2020 album Darkness Brings Wonders Home, are back with Carried In Sound.
Carried In Sound is a continuation of Smoke Fairies' pursuit of a warm and ethereal aesthetic that has defined them since the beginning. Despite tackling themes of darkness, the album emanates a sense of inner strength, a reflection of the times that inspired it. Leading the way is the enchanting single "Vanishing Line," accompanied by a cinematic video, that looks into the difficult and intimate emotions tied to loss and grief, offering a warm and emotive glimpse into the theme of the new album.
Recorded in a terrace house with a mindful volume to respect neighbors, the album exudes an intimate, hushed appeal. Carried In Sound is marked by audio invention and an unapologetic commitment to truth. Departing from their previous work, the album presents a unique form of magic, blurring the lines between autobiography and storytelling.
Jessica Davies, one half of the duo, shares insights into the album's emotional backdrop, stating, "Although the album has themes of sadness on there, it's looking at those things from a place of strength. With notes of reflection, grief, and joy, we hope you find it an emotive, rewarding experience to listen to."
Smoke Fairies, a project rooted in friendship, sees Davies and Katherine Blamire navigating the highs and lows of life together since childhood. Their musical collaboration serves as a constant in their lives, providing solace and expression. Carried In Sound was born of their self-reliance, navigating through a pandemic, home recording, and true independence to create something faithful to their ambitions. Enriched by their own experiences, the album embodies a timeless quality, shaped by the serendipity of friendship and a joyful sadness.
As Davies notes, "Everything happens for a reason, but equally, everything is a reaction."
