Sophie Allison’s fourth album, Evergreen, is a raw and tender reflection on loss, growth, and the beauty of embracing life’s emotional complexities through stripped-back, cinematic indie rock.

Sophie Allison, better known as Soccer Mommy, has carved out a niche in indie rock as one of its most candid and cherished voices over the last decade. From her humble beginnings posting plaintive demos on Bandcamp, Allison has evolved Soccer Mommy into a vehicle for introspection and growth, navigating the complexities of life through her music.

With her fourth album, Evergreen, Allison continues this journey, examining new personal territory shaped by profound loss since her previous release, 2022’s Sometimes, Forever. These songs serve as unflinching reflections on her experiences, blending raw honesty with moments of unexpected levity—like an ode to her purple-haired wife in the video game Stardew Valley.

Unlike the experimental textures of her previous work, Evergreen returns to Soccer Mommy’s roots, capturing a cinematic scope while maintaining the raw authenticity of Allison's original demos. Tracks like the acoustic-driven "Lost" and the introspective "Thinking of You" offer poignant snapshots of emotion, framed by acoustic guitars, rich drums, and interweaving flutes.

Produced alongside Ben H. Allen III (known for his work with Deerhunter and Animal Collective), Allison deliberately eschewed digital embellishments, opting instead for a sound that honors the simplicity and sincerity of her songwriting process. The result is an album that feels immediate and intimate, where each track showcases Allison’s ability to capture fleeting moments of sadness, beauty, and hope.

More than a mere collection of songs, Evergreen is a reflection of Allison’s journey into her late twenties, where the realities of adulthood loom large amidst the echoes of childhood. It’s a attestation to resilience and growth in the face of loss, exploring themes of nostalgia and the bittersweet passage of time.

Sophie Allison’s ability to transform personal turmoil into universal truths makes Evergreen a poignant addition to her discography—a reminder that vulnerability and strength often walk hand in hand in the journey of self-discovery.
