Featuring tracks from Kneecap alongside contributions from Bicep, Fontaines D.C., and Orbital, the soundtrack album for their semi-biographical film captures the rebellious spirit the band.
Irish hip-hop trio Kneecap aren’t only making waves in music, they’re taking over the silver screen as well. The self-titled, semi-biographical film Kneecap has become one of 2024’s most talked-about movies, and the soundtrack is an equally electrifying addition to their cinematic debut. It blends pounding beats with cultural commentary, mirroring the film’s take-no-prisoners energy. Composer Michael "Mikey J" Asante MBE provides the film’s incidental music, weaving his dynamic compositions between snippets of dialogue from the movie. It’s a sonic collage that pulses with the rhythm of Belfast streets, reflecting the trio’s progression from underground disruptors to modern day men of the people.
Set in West Belfast in 2019, Kneecap chronicles how fate brought Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí together, forging a sound that redefined Irish music. The trio plays themselves in the film, joined by Oscar-nominated actor Michael Fassbender, Simone Kirby, and Josie Walker. The film’s bold humor and rambunctious spirit have struck a chord globally, with screenings across the U.K., U.S., and Ireland and now expanding to the rest of the world.
The soundtrack’s success mirrors that of the film. With 14 British Independent Film Award nominations - including Best Music Supervision, Best Original Music, and Best British Independent Film - it’s clear the music plays a vital role in the movie’s impact. The film has already scooped the Next Audience Award at Sundance and the Audience Award at Galway Film Fleadh. Most notably, Kneecap was selected by the Irish Film & Television Academy to represent Ireland in the Oscars’ International Feature Film category.
Following the release of their debut album Fine Art in June of 2024, Kneecap has continued to build momentum with riotous festival performances. Their sets at Glastonbury, Reading, and Leeds festivals earned them a reputation as a must-see live band. The Kneecap soundtrack truly captures the sound of a movement that’s as unapologetic as it is contagious, bringing the trio’s rebellious spirit to audiences worldwide. Whether blasting through headphones or echoing through cinemas, this album is proof that Kneecap’s moment is now.
