Springhouse’s 2008 album From Now to OK finally gets the deluxe treatment across vinyl, CD, and digital formats, marking the long-awaited return of one of New York’s finest indie bands. Originally released as a limited edition CD, this version has been remastered by Josh Bonati and comes with a bonus CD of rare demos and live tracks, giving fans a fresh glimpse into the band’s creative process and behind-the-scenes moments.
From Now to OK is Springhouse at their most introspective, drawing on folk rock and acoustic sensibilities while still bearing the unmistakable melodic textures that made them a standout act in the shoegaze movement. The album is a journey through delicate guitar work, evocative songwriting, and a distinct late-‘60s Britfolk influence, paying homage to artists like Nick Drake and the Beatles. The charm of the album is in its dreamy atmosphere, where Mitch Friedland’s nylon-stringed guitar dances effortlessly with the rhythms of bassist Larry Heinemann and drummer Jack Rabid.
This reissue comes in a meticulously designed package by Bruce Licher, showcasing the band’s signature aesthetic with a vintage touch. It’s available on classic black vinyl, clear orange vinyl, and a very limited translucent green tint vinyl that was released for RSD Black Friday in 2024. The remastered CD edition includes a bonus second disc featuring previously unreleased demos and live cuts that highlight the band’s in-the-moment energy and creativity, all wrapped up in a stunning letterpress-printed insert from Independent Project Press.
Springhouse’s legacy, especially during the early ‘90s, solidified their place in indie rock history. As the first major U.S. shoegaze band to make an impact with national tours and a Rolling Stone feature, their work with Caroline Records set them apart from the pack. Their early albums Land Falls and Postcards From the Arctic are revered as classics, but From Now to OK represents a shift to something quieter, more reflective, a perfect blend of their shoegaze roots and folk-tinged exploration.
Mitch Friedland, the band’s frontman and guitarist, is often remembered for his unique approach to guitar, playing exclusively small nylon-string acoustics with custom pickups, often experimenting with alternate tunings and reverb-heavy effects. This, combined with Heinemann’s rich bass lines and Rabid’s driving percussion, created a sound that was at once lush and raw, melodic and experimental.
Springhouse may have stepped back from the spotlight after their heyday, but the reissue of From Now to OK proves their music continues to resonate. With a renewed focus on their late-‘80s and early-‘90s influence, this reissue presents an opportunity to revisit an era that, in hindsight, helped define an entire genre.
