Sue Foley's One Guitar Woman puts the spotlight on the female pioneers of guitar – to celebrate women of independent spirit, vision, passion, and accomplishments.
Sue Foley, a three-time Blues Foundation Traditional Female Artist award winner presents her latest album, One Guitar Woman: A Tribute To The Female Pioneers Of Guitar. This heartfelt collection pays homage to the female pioneers of the guitar, including legends such as Memphis Minnie, Lydia Mendoza, Maybelle Carter, Ida Presti, and Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
Foley's acoustic nylon string guitar skills take center stage, showcasing her exceptional versatility as she seamlessly ventures into Piedmont fingerpicking, traditional country, flamenco, and classical genres. Her ability to expand beyond blues playing demonstrates a profound musical evolution.
Reflecting on her inspiration, Foley shares, "From the time I decided to be a professional guitar player, I've always looked for female role models. These women, dating back to the 1920s, were true trailblazers and visionaries who expressed themselves through the instrument. Their footsteps are the ones I walk in."
In May 2023, Foley's remarkable talents were recognized with the Blues Music Award for Traditional Blues Female Artist (aka the Koko Taylor Award) in Memphis, TN, marking her third win. Further accolades followed, with honors such as Guitarist of the Year and Blues Act of the Year at the 2023 Austin Music Awards, and Guitarist of the Year at the 2023 Maple Blues Awards.
Building on her success, Foley's previous studio album, Pinky's Blues, earned the prestigious title of Best Traditional Blues Album at the 2022 Blues Music Awards. Her latest live album, Sue Foley Live In Austin Vol. 1, continues to make waves, spending an impressive 12 weeks at No. 1 on the Roots Music Chart. Additionally, it has garnered recognition on numerous blues Best Of 2023 lists.
