SUM 41 go out in style and on their own terms with Heaven : x: Hell, the final album from an unlikely band of underdogs who made it all the way to the top.
In the chronicles of Canadian rock history, few bands have left a bigger mark on pop-punk than SUM 41. Now, after over two decades, the band exit the stage with their magnum opus double album, Heaven : x: Hell. The band’s decision to bid adieu with a double album speaks volumes about their commitment to not giving a damn about what anyone else thinks, or thinks they’re capable of. Divided into two distinct domains, "Heaven" and "Hell," the album offers everything the guys have left to give and leaves it all out on the (studio) floor. Personally, I think it also shows you can’t be a Canadian band, no matter what genre, without some Rush influence seeping into you.
On "Heaven," the first part of the album, SUM 41 revisits the infectious pop-punk sound that brought them fame in the early years, a nostalgic return to their roots of spirited anthems that helped define an era. Lead singer Deryck Whibley reflects on the album's first single, "Landmines," revealing how its creation was an organic manifestation of their essence rather than a calculated throwback. It shows the band can still capture lightning in a bottle, even after nearly three decades together. On the second part, "Hell," they dig deeper into the heavy metal sound they've more recently reached for, ratcheting up the ferocity and intensity. It's all about their refusal to be pigeonholed into what people expect them to be.
SUM 41 can be proud when they reflect on their remarkable 27-year journey, where they stood tall among rock royalty, and can look back on an impressive array of accolades. With over 15 million records sold worldwide, multiple Billboard chart-toppers, and a Grammy Award nomination to their name, the band's impact is undeniable. Their trophy cabinet also includes two Juno Awards, a Kerrang! Award, and numerous Alternative Press Music Awards. Heaven : x: Hell is a fond farewell and a celebration of their unlikely journey as snot-nosed kids from humble beginnings to international superstars.
