The Headhunters' 50th Anniversary celebration, Live From Brooklyn Bowl, offers both devoted fans and newcomers a chance to experience their groundbreaking sound in its raw and electrifying form. This release pays tribute to their incredible journey and underlines their lasting musical legacy. The band is slated to return to Europe and Canada this Fall and embark on an international tour in 2024. The Headhunters' story continues to evolve, leaving a lasting mark on the world of music.
Formed in 1973 under the leadership of the renowned musician Herbie Hancock, the Headhunters quickly made a name for themselves. With members like percussionist Bill Summers, bassist Paul Jackson, saxophonist Bennie Maupin, and eventually legendary drummer Mike Clark, each brought their unique talents to create a lasting legacy. Mixing jazz, funk, and rock, the Headhunters' sound connected with audiences globally, selling over a million albums and inspiring generations of musicians, particularly in hip-hop, during the '80s and '90s.
The impact of the Headhunters endures today, and their time with Herbie Hancock was a defining experience. The band released six more albums after parting ways with Hancock in the mid '70s, including notable records like Survival of the Fittest in 1975 and Straight from the Gate in 1977. They later reunited with Hancock in 1998 for Return of The Headhunters and went on to release Evolution Revolution in 2003 and Platinum in 2011. Their most recent studio album, Speakers In The House, was released in late 2022 to international acclaim.
Today, the Headhunters, co-led by original members Bill Summers and Mike Clark, continue to thrive. They've added some of New Orleans' finest musicians to their lineup, including Kyle Roussel on keys, Donald Harrison on alto sax, and Chris Severin on seven-string bass. These lifelong friends have turned the band into a musical powerhouse.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of their eponymous album, the Headhunters embarked on a world tour in early 2023. The journey kicked off with a remarkable performance at the Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg, New York, on February 9th, 2023. This live recording, expertly mixed and mastered by Keenan McRae in New Orleans, captures the band's incredible energy. The resulting live document features their greatest hits, including "Watermelon Man," "Chameleon," "Butterfly," and the original track "Rocking At The Mole House" from Speakers In The House.
