Vienna Vienna’s debut EP Wonderland blends pop-punk, queer pop, and soft-rock to explore self-acceptance and the beauty of embracing authenticity.
Vienna Vienna's debut EP Wonderland is an exploration of the artist’s journey with queerness and self-acceptance, creating a cathartic space for both the artist and their audience. The EP blends elements of '00s pop-punk, queer pop, and soft-rock ballads to craft a sound that celebrates the beauty of strangeness and authenticity - something Vienna Vienna has long sought to embrace.
Growing up anxious and conflicted about their identity, Vienna Vienna found music to be both a coping mechanism and a path to self-expression. What started as a way to navigate feelings of isolation became a tool for self-love and acceptance.
Reflecting on the process of creating Wonderland, Vienna Vienna describes it as “a bit of a time capsule,” one that captures the raw and vulnerable moments of coming into oneself. “Coming-of-age stories have always fascinated me - how and when people discover themselves,” they explain. “I looked at my life and thought I was finally becoming, so I wrote it down.” The result is a collection of tracks that speak to both the pain of self-discovery and the hope of finding a place in the world.
Among the standout tracks are "Beauty Queen" and "Vienna (Everything’s Fine)," each capturing a unique blend of emotion and insight. Vienna Vienna notes that the EP is also an intimate glimpse into their personal struggles, saying, “It was finding community, still feeling lonely, finding a voice but too scared to say anything - though less so now that I’ve found a place in it all.”
The EP’s creation was made all the more affirming with the support of Pete Wentz's DCD2 Records and PULSE Records, who Vienna Vienna says “just get it.” Wentz, who was drawn to Vienna Vienna’s music from the first listen, explains the appeal: “Have you ever heard something that both felt so familiar and so alien all at once? That’s how I felt when I first heard a Vienna Vienna song. The lyricism feels adjacent to something our band would do, but also completely new and odd in the best way.”
As Vienna Vienna reflects on the journey that led to the creation of Wonderland, they express gratitude for the community that has helped shape the artist they are today. “Strangeness is celebrated here, which is all I’ve ever asked for,” they say.
