Blues Traveler’s Ben Wilson teams up with drummer Rob Avsharian to deliver Heroes and Hangmen, genre-blending odyssey that channels blues, groove-heavy pop, and vintage synth vibes into a fresh, introspective album born from pandemic-era reflection.
Blues Traveler’s Ben Wilson steps into the spotlight once again with Heroes and Hangmen, his first full-length release from Wilson Arms in more than a decade. Wilson Arms is the experimental, genre-blending project he formed with celebrated drummer Rob Avsharian. This ten-track collection sees the duo navigate blues-rooted, groove-heavy pop with an eclectic nod to '70s and '80s synth stylings, capturing the sounds that defined their formative years while pushing into new sonic territories.
Wilson Arms emerged in the isolation of the pandemic, as Wilson and Avsharian – long-time friends and seasoned collaborators – found themselves creatively restless and seeking a fresh direction. What began as an introspective project during those uncertain times evolved over four years into Heroes and Hangmen, an album that straddles introspection and experimentation. The record, featuring Wilson on vocals, keyboards, and programmed bass and guitar, alongside Avsharian on drums and guitar, was shaped from their homes in a deeply personal yet far-reaching collaboration.
The new album is an evolution from their previous work, 2013's Throwing Wrenches, expanding their range while maintaining a cohesive sound. Avsharian highlights Wilson’s growth as a songwriter and producer, saying, “I am so proud of the continued evolution of Ben's songwriting, singing, and experimentation.” Wilson himself credits Avsharian’s contributions to the structure and polish of each track, as well as the album's sound engineer Lang Freeman for helping solidify the record’s nuanced production.
Already earning praise for its lead single “Bleeding Heart,” hailed by Music for All as an “upbeat blues-rock tune with progressive elements,” Heroes and Hangmen taps into Wilson Arms' most honest work yet. The album offers listeners a rootsy, progressive pop journey with layers of heart and craftsmanship, all crafted by two musicians exploring new horizons in each track.
