With Fasten Up, Yellowjackets push their signature fusion of groove, improvisation, and world-class musicianship to new heights, proving that after more than four decades, they’re still setting the standard for modern jazz.
With over four decades of groundbreaking jazz fusion behind them, the Yellowjackets aren't slowing down, in fact, they're shifting into high gear. Fasten Up, their 27th studio album, finds the Grammy-winning quartet once again redefining their sound while staying true to the adventurous spirit that has kept them at the forefront of modern jazz. Pianist Russell Ferrante, saxophonist Bob Mintzer, drummer Will Kennedy, and bassist Dane Alderson push the boundaries of groove and harmony across 11 tracks, delivering a fresh yet unmistakably Yellowjackets experience.
At the heart of Fasten Up is the band’s signature blend of intricate composition and fluid improvisation, with 10 originals and a spirited take on Ben Tucker’s classic “Comin’ Home Baby.” Among the highlights is "The Lion," a track featuring the soulful and virtuosic vocals of Mack Avenue label mate Raul Midón, adding yet another dynamic layer to the album. It’s a reminder that the Yellowjackets are never content to stand still, they evolve, refine, and elevate with every release.
Formed in the late ‘70s as Robben Ford’s backing band, the Yellowjackets quickly carved out their own space in jazz, setting a new standard for fusion with their self-titled 1981 debut. While lineup changes have been inevitable over the years, the band’s core commitment to innovation and world-class musicianship has never wavered. From their early trio days with Ferrante, Jimmy Haslip, and Ricky Lawson to their current powerhouse lineup, the Yellowjackets have continually found ways to refresh their sound without losing the essence of what makes them one of the most enduring groups in jazz.
With Fasten Up, they continue that legacy, striking a balance between technical brilliance and pure, infectious energy. Whether locking into deep grooves or soaring through expansive solos, the Yellowjackets prove once again why they remain one of the most influential and beloved jazz groups of their time.
